Emmy Award-winning TV news anchor, journalist and producer Bill Kurtis, host of several A&E cable network series including "American Justice," will emcee this year's PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation (PHSF) Awards Gala, to be held Saturday evening, Nov. 3 in Cathedral Hall of the University Club of Chicago. "American Justice" is the longest running non-fiction justice series on cable TV. A published author, his most recent book, The Death Penalty on Trial: Crisis in American Justice, explores issues surrounding capital punishment in America. "We're honored to have someone of Bill Kurtis' national and international stature associated with our Awards Gala this year," said PHSF Foundation Chairman Chris P. Tomaras, "and we thank both His Grace Bishop Demetrios, and PHSF Advisory Committee Chairman John Apostolou, for helping to secure Bill's participation." A longtime philhellene, Kurtis had also served as master of ceremonies at the main banquet during Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew's 1997 visit to Chicago.

Unlike other programs that award many, but smaller, scholarships, the PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation's was designed to make the difference between whether or not a promising Greek-American is able to undertake or continue their higher education. "Last year, through the generosity of our donors nationwide, we were able to distribute $140,000, virtually all of it in $10,000 Grants," explained Apostolou. "And for this year, more than 150 applicants have submitted applications, which are a record for us. We need the support of all, with large donations or small, to set these exemplary Greek-Americans on the road to being ambassadors of Hellenism in American society in the decades ahead. Because America needs the eternal values of Hellenism today more than ever." Donations, including $10,000 Grants named for a company or loved one, can be made online, by mail or by calling Mr. Tomaras at the Foundation's offices: (312) 357-6432.
