10 Winners Receive $100,000 in PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation Grants
Overflow crowd sees $100,000 in Grants go to outstanding Greek-American students at annual Gala in Chicago

10/29/2005

CHICAGO, IL - Oct. 31, 2005  With a handshake and a hug from PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation Chairman Chris P. Tomaras, and some occasional tears, ten of our "best and brightest" Greek-American students from all over America received $10,000 Scholarship Grants at the Foundation's annual Awards Gala, held this year on Saturday, October 29, 2005 at the prestigious University Club of Chicago.  Each of the Grant Recipients' responses were followed by shouts of "Bravo!" and the applause of family, local and foreign dignitaries from as far away as Greece and Panama, and hundreds of well-wishers who came out to congratulate them for their achievements, and to encourage them to aim even higher in the years ahead.

Those emotions and encouragement were also reflected in the words of Sen. Paul Sarbanes and Rep. Michael Bilirakis, who received the Foundation's first "Paradigm Awards" for "...the example they have given every future generation of Greek Americans in the area of public service."   Rep. Bilirakis told the crowd that he was "...truly humbled by the idea that his career would now be held up as a "paradigma," or example for future Greek-Americans," and that the responses of the ten Grant Recipients, made in Greek and English, and without exception thanking God, had moved him.

Greece's legendary songstress Glykeria, in Chicago for a benefit concert in support of the Metropolis of Chicago and the "Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew Health Clinic" in Kerala, India, was a Special Guest of the Foundation and did an impromptu medley of her many hits mid-way through the presentation of Grant Awards.  Glykeria also received an award for her promotion of Hellenism worldwide from Tomaras in his capacity as Vice President of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (ΣΑΕ).

Ten Recipients come from all over the U.S.;

Major benefactors include Apostolou Family, On-Airr Productions, Angelo K. Tsakopoulos, Dr. Adams, Giannakopoulos, Balourdos Family and Tomaras

Each of the ten recipients received a certificate and a check for $10,000 from this year's contributions.   "The high quality of this year's applicants should make Hellenes everywhere very proud, and I'm pleased that the Board of Directors has decided to send 'Certificates of Commendation' to the ten runners-up," said Academic Committee Chairman Dr. George Alexopoulos.  The Gala's Program Book and gallery of photos are being posted on the Foundation's website, www.panhellenicscholarships.org.
