$250,000 in Grants to be presented to 25 Greek-American students with financial need

11/06/2009

The PanHellenic Scholarship Foundation is pleased to announce that 51 of this year's applicants have been selected by the Academic Selection Committee as 2009 winners.  All 51 will be recognized as the nation's best and brightest Greek-American students and will receive the Foundation's High Commendation Award.  Of these, 25 will also receive $250,000 in cash grants, having demonstrated financial need.

"The Foundation received an overwhelming number of applications, and the high caliber of applicants made the evaluation of the Academic Selection Committee exceptionally challenging," said Dr. George Alexopoulos, Chairman of the Committee.

"We remain true to our mission which is to recognize and honor academic achievement while providing economic support to those who need it," said Chris Tomaras, Chairman of the Foundation and continued: "In this spirit, we consider all 51 of this year's scholars as our winners and they will be inducted in the PanHellenic Honors Society.  And, unlike previous practice, only students with documented financial need - this year 25 - will receive the $10,000 grants."

"This year's Awards Gala will take place on Friday, November 20 at the Union League Club of Chicago where all 51 students are invited to come and receive their awards.  At this illustrious event, we are honored to have Dr. Thanasis Economou, University of Chicago and NASA Senior Planetary Scientist to be our 2009 PARADIGM AWARD recipient.  And we are delighted to have actress and TV personality of NBC's Deal or No Deal as our emcee, promising a truly memorable event," Mr. Tomaras added.
